Yesterday we decided to try and get a little inspiration for the wedding and headed on up to Los Angeles’ flower district. Our morning started a little later than expected because AJ had a rowdy night with Jack and Cheryl at the Newport Beach Ducati opening the night before. So, instead of waking up at 6am as planned, we rolled out of bed at 8:30. After a quick stop at Starbucks we were on our way. Fortunately for us, traffic was kind and we got there in just under an hour. Not knowing what to expect, we headed on into a large warehouse. The thing we noticed first was the amazing aroma wafting out the open door as we walked in. The next thing was the seemingly never ending rows of flowers. It was amazing!
We wandered aimlessly for a bit, trying to get a feel what we might like. And then we found the orchids. I couldn’t believe the variety of colors they had. Giant phalenopsis in beautiful whites and purples and greens. Dendrobian orchids with bright yellows and pinks. I was in heaven.
Even AJ had a bit of fun!
And of course I had to come home with some flowers, so I picked up a few for the house.
After about an hour of wandering the flower market, and getting the great “we’re closing for the day and if we don’t sell these they are gonna die” deals – $1 for a HUGE bunch of lilies – we loaded up the car and decided to head on over to Olvera Street. AJ had never been and it had been a few years since I had last been.
The car, loaded up with our haul.
Me with all the flowers AJ bought me.
Things I love about LA. It’s only about an hour away when traffic is good. There are fun places, like the flower district, fashion district etc. Great restraunts. Beautiful architecture. Lots of history.
Things I hate about LA. It is normally more than an hour away because traffic is normally a mess. The fun places are right next to skid row, so it is dirty, smelly and really not the safest neighborhood for me to walk in alone.
Keeping all of this in mind, we decided to walk the mile and a half to Olvera Street. It wan’t that far and we could use the exercise. Following the walking directions on my handy iPhone, we headed on out down Los Angeles Street. Swarms of people were out and shopping that day. We had fun looking into the little shops in the garment district and laughing at the signs we saw along the way. After a bit we got tired of all the “culture” and moved one block over to Main Street, which also happened to be the gallery district. It was a bit nicer and there weren’t so many people on the steet here. We walked past City Hall, which is a beautiful building. And eventually made it to Olvera Street.
Olvera Street is the first street in LA. It is a coble stoned street right across from Union Station. You really feel like you are in Mexico. We had lunch at the oldest brick ediface in California. It was called La Golandrina and the food was great.
So were the margaritas.
All in all, it was a good day. What did we learn from our outting? Well, we may be closer to picking out colors for the wedding, downtown LA has it’s own distinct smell, and I really like margaritas!
If you would like to head on up to the flower district yourself, here is a little bit of info:
Please remember that this is in the wholesale district, just a few blocks over from skid row.
